Dream Center works to close the gap between poverty and education

Every Arkansans’ mission is to see kids chase their God-given dreams and the power of education can change the trajectory of a kid’s life. Programming at the Arkansas Dream Center ensures kids are equipped to take on school so they can confidently excel in the classroom.

With after school and mobile locations, the Dream Center offers tutoring programs so kids can step into the classroom ready. Through partnerships with local elementary schools, Dream Center tutors and mentors help kids meet their educational goals. Whether it’s working through math problems or reading a book out loud, relationships are fostered so kids know they are supported and seen as they overcome barriers in their educational journey.

A statistic released by the New York Times says less than 30% of students in the bottom quarter of incomes enroll in a four year school. Among that group – less than 50% graduate. The poverty cycle can end when kids have strong, supportive relationships so they can reach educational advancement. Marius Mauthe, director of the Arkansas Dream Center, said this is cultivated through tutors and mentors at the Dream Center.

“Our volunteers build relationships and confidence in kids. They are encouraging and cheer them on as they face struggles. The kids come back to their tutor or mentor and face their challenges together so they can accomplish their educational goals,” Mauthe said.

Building these relationships looks like coming alongside kids so they know they are supported and encouraged when conquering challenges in their life- both in the classroom and at home. Poverty greatly impacts children’s education as it is another hurdle for them to overcome in order to lift them out of their economic situation.

As a new school year begins, kids need supplies so they can take on the year ready. For many Dream Center families, buying school supplies can be a burden. With rising gas prices and inflation, providing these supplies is an added stress for families. To lift this burden, Every Arkansan is asking for backpack and school supply donations to bless families.

“Our back to school fundraiser is crucial. As a parent myself and having to buy all the supplies is expensive,” Mauthe said. “Providing a backpack and supplies can go a long way for families. You can support them as they launch their kids into their next school year by making sure they're not behind and ready for the year.”

Education opens doors to resources, jobs and skills. A quality education can change a kid’s life as it provides opportunities for the future. With education and relationships, poverty can end as kids wholeheartedly chase their God-given dreams and pursue a future free from economic bondage.
